PHILOSOPHY

TECHNICAL STUFF

My start in photography is rather odd. For years, I never really paid much attention to photography at all. I was a big fan of painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. In fact, I held the view that photography was a sub-creative medium. My opinion has definitely changed!

Around '95, I bought an old Pentax Program Plus 35mm film camera from a friend and messed with it a little. Then it broke some years ago, and I never bothered replacing it. Didn't really miss it either! Then, in July of '05, I bought my first digital camera, and a whole new world opened up for me. Now I want to buy a good film camera and shoot in B&W!

In September of '05, I started photographing people in a controlled setting, and fell in love with photography. What moved me was being able to capture personality - mood - feeling - the human face and body. When done right, photography can capture the essence of someone's spirit - the 'person behind the mask', as I like to call it. What I am is a sociologist with a lens. But that's nothing new; as long as I can remember, I have been a people watcher.

Now I enjoy to take pictures of people, architecture, nature, athletes, pets, babies, still lifes - it's not so much the subject matter as how you view it. I am still finding my wings of course, but I hope to be finding them forever. Not being formally trained, I started off operating from sheer Gut - Intuition, Imagination, Inspiration, Vision. I 'feel' what I want to capture, and go for it.

The pictures here were taken in a fairly large digital format of 6+ megapixels. They have been reduced for the web, which omits a bit of information, of course, such as clarity and the color scheme. Beyond this however, most of these pics have not been touched or modified - THEY ARE AS TAKEN. I am a believer in cropping the shot right the moment you take it. There is another whole art to re-touching photographs, but this is not my style.

ALEX COVARRUBIAS' ALL-PURPOSE PARTY
February 4, 2006

Shooting this party was a last-minute idea on my part,
and Alex was very gracious - thanks, bro.

His parties are always off the hook.
I wanted an opportunity to test my photo skills on the spot -
me, a couple of lights, a backdrop, and lots of people.

Tell the truth, I wasn't even sure anyone would find their way upstairs to get their pic taken -
I thought I'd shoot maybe 30-40 people, then chill and play some sax.
Boy, was I wrong!

I shot 431 pics between 12 and 4am - of almost 100 people!
People just kept comin' and comin.'
I worked my ass off and never even got to touch my sax.
By the time I took a break at 3 am, I couldn't even find a glass of water, much less a drink!

I learned some crucial things from this shoot.
Since I don't like to stiffly pose my subjects, I ran into the problem of blur at low lighting.
So when the shoot was over, I sat with my camera and did some experimentation,
and am proud to say I finally figured out how to stop blur in low-lighting!
As a bonus, I also figured out how to achieve that elusive 'grain' that mimics film!
Now, having shot in nearly every setting and parameter, I feel very confident with my skills.

FOR ALL YOU PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PHOTO SHOOT, HERE'S THE DEAL:
You can use these photos for anything you like, except commercial use.
And if you use them, please credit them.

HIGHLANDS, NORTH CAROLINA
November 5-7, 2005

For my birthday, I had a gig in Highlands, N.C.
Normally, I wouldn't to take a gig on my b'day, but I had been to the Highlands before, and loved it.
Plus, my clients were terrific people, so I stayed the whole weekend.
I took a room at the 4 1/2 Street Inn, which I had been to before,
and well knew the congeniality of the owners, Rick and Helene Seigel.
If you are planning a trip north, I highly reccomend the 4 1/2 Street Inn - the breakfast and cocktail hour alone are worth it -
# 828-526-4464, www.4andahalfstinn.com, relax@4andhalfstinn.com

I was fortunate, because by November, it's usually 30 degrees and all the trees are barren.
Here are some photos from the trip - many more are coming, as I find the time!

HALLOWEEN - APRES DIEM
October 31, 2005

This party was a blast!
I didn't know I was going to shoot it until a few days before, so I picked out a decent spot to shoot.
But on the night of the shoot it was very dark, and I was stuck using my onboard flash, which isn't the greatest.
In retrospect, I should have brought a backdrop and a light with me -
Still, these shots came out pretty good, and the participants were very obliging!
Thanks to all of you.

Years ago there was a guy who hung out on Ponce and Boulevard in a matching gold suit, hat, and gold Cadillac -
I kid you not.
My 'Vintage Pimp' is a tribute to him, wherever he is... (probably in jail)!
I want to give a shout out to Sam for inviting me to shoot the party - thanks, my man!

MERRILL GRANT
Second Sitting
October 25, 2005

Merrill was the first model who ever sat for me, (see bottom of page).
I had learned a good bit about lighting since I first shot her, and wanted to experiment a little.
We already scheduled to design her business cards, so I tacked on a quick shoot as well.
I'm using 3 light sources here, on dimmers, and 2 reflectors.
Some of what I tried worked, some didn't, and I used a setting I ultimately didn't like.
But that's how you learn - onward and upward!

128 total pics, 45 minutes, 6 shown

Business Card design #1 - my favorite.
For some reason, these converted showing the backround as grey - it's really black.

Another variation - again, backround is really black!

ST, CHARLES AVENUE
October 19, 2005

Since I don't have time to sort thru all the photos from this shoot,
I'll leave you one for All Hallow's Eve - Halloween, by any other name -
Hey, girls - you'll love this one!

This guy is about this size in real life - no joke.
The wind was blowing the web back and forth violently, and he was hopping on it.
I have no idea what he was doing. Perhaps he needed the exercise?
Because I only had a 15-55 lens, I had to get about about 1 inch away from him to get this shot.
And I was standing in the bushes, leaning over in sandals?
Altogeter very fun, indeed.

VIRGINIA AVENUE VOLLEYBALL
October 17, 2005

I've never really practiced shooting moving objects before, (unless you count the firing range...!) ;)
But these volleyballers were very accomodating, (as was the skater in the Park, below).
I can't wait to get a longer lens, which will enable me to really get these kinds of shots!

PIEDMONT PARK
October 16, 2005

Piedmont park is only a mile from my house.
On this day, I biked to the park, then over to Bridgetown Grill on Peachtree for a rehearsal.
I left at 4 pm and returned at 10 pm, allowing me to capture the city in daylight and at night - a nice contrast.

VIRGINIA HIGHLAND STROLL
October 14, 2005

No, this isn't the 'official' Virginia Highland Stroll we're talking about.
One day, I decided to walk to my chiropractor's office, in an attempt to avoid burning dinosaur bones,
and document the neighborhood in the process.
I started from my apt on St. Charles and walked to Highland Chiropractic (near Movies Worth Seeing / Doc Chey's), and back -

When I started it was 5:15, with plenty of light out.
On my way bcak, it was pitch black, with the exception of a nearly full moon, and I got back home at 9:50 -
about 4 miles round trip and 4 1/2 hours total!
This was also the first wonderfully chilly night of the year

MAJESTIC FOG
October 9, 2005

I was driving back from Decatur in the fog on this lovely evening, and had my trusty camera with me.
The Majestic positively glowed in the darkness.
I like this place. It speaks volumes of history.
1929. Imagine all the people who have sat here. All the loves, the losses...
It is one of the few places of history Atlanta hasn't torn down. And history is important.

If you'll look closely, there is a girl at the front counter, flirting with the cook. She is leaning over the counter all sexy and such in a dress.
At original size (2'x2') it really comes out.
I'll have to put up an inset photo soon...

This is the church across the street.
Although it looks like sunrise, it is 1 am, and I shot with no flash.
I had to be stand completely still and wait for the shudder to reopen -
which took forever!

EL GATO
October 5-8, 2005

For some reason, I can usually never get Stripes, my cat, to look at a camera.
Well, he must dig this camera, 'cause he's really muggin' it up here!

CRYSTAL
October 4, 2005

This shoot was all outdoors.
Her goal here was to get headshots and a full-body pic for a comp card,
so I tried to reign myself in and not get too crazy with interesting 'framings' and camera angles.

STREET LIFE - LITTLE 5 POINTS &
FLOWERS ON ST. CHARLES AVENUE
October 2, 2005

Gee - is it October already? Where did the year go?
L5P has always been one of the most colorful parts of Atlanta. I live about a mile away and go there often.
It may be the one last vestages removed from the self-conscious narcissism of Buckhead and much of the rest of Atlanta.
On this particular day, there was a street parade and concerts benefitting New Orleans musicians.
I was on my bike and on the way back home, I captured some of the 'hood, and the floral life on St. Charles Ave in Virginia Highlands.

ANNIE
September 26, 2005

I really went overboard on this shoot -
It was more like 4 shoots in one, with all the clothing & backround changes, indoor, outdoor, etc.
It was fun, (but really exhausting).
Annie is an absolute DOLL to work with. She's a good sport with a ton of patience and a smile that lights up like a Christmas tree.
She wants to do 'bridal' modeling, and I feel she could really do it professionally.
Thank you for a great shoot, Annie - you're fabulous.

'C'
September 20, 2005

'C' wanted photos for a comp card for modeling uses.
She was very easy to work with, and we got a variety of shots - headshots, creative portraits, even artistic nudes.
These shots were taken when the sun was almost down, leaving me to rely mostly on man-made lighting.
I was trying to get a low-light feel, but at this early stage I lost a number of shots because I didn't know how to adjust.
This experience helped me get bettor control of my lighting for Annie's shoot, (above).
Thanks, Crystal - and good luck with your multiple careers.

IF NUDITY OFFENDS YOU, DON'T LOOK!

"I am a photographer myself and I was really suprised at Dave's natural ability.
He is really good at making you feel comfortable and catching the right moment.
You can tell he is very dedicated to making his work, (no matter which one of the million projects it is!), something he can be proud of.
He really was a joy to work with and I look forward to next time."

MERRILL
September 18, 2005

Merrill is an opera singer and theater actress with a fantastic voice. She is also a gorgeous gal with a beautiful, expressive face.
After meeting her, I was really surprised when I saw her business card. Her photo was lifeless and reflected none of her personality!
For a girl with an acting / singing resume a mile long, I thought, 'She really has some crappy pics'. And of course, just like me - I told her!

I said, "Where's your personality? It's absent! I can do better than this!"
Well, she gave me the opportunity, and for this I am very grateful...
Thank you, Merrill!

My first 'planned' shoot - ever.
All I had was a cheap light from the hardware store, some diffusing paper, natural light from the window, and some fabric.
You can tell I'm really trying to figure out my lighting here!

KINAH BOTO
August 3, 2005

Kinah Boto has been my neighbor for about 8 or 9 years. He is also one of the deepest, finest drummers I've ever heard or had the pleasure of working with. These shots came about because my guitarist, Dan Baraszu, recently recorded his debut CD with Kinah, and needed some pics for liner notes. He knew I just got this new digital camera, so he called and asked if I would snap some shots.

When we passed the barbecue, anidea came to me, and Kinah played it off like an actor - cracks me up every time I see it -
'Now servin' up some hot sounds!' (The small touches - the drum brush hanging off the side, like a spatula).
Much to my chagrin, Dan didn't use this particular shot for the CD.
But it's my fave, and makes me laugh everytime I see it. 100% Kinah!
