My father wrote many beautiful songs, lyrics and poems during his life, in addition to being a fine
professional guitarist in New York City.
This song was written in 1955.

I will be recording a CD of my father's music soon.

Taped for 'Good Day Atlanta' at Fox 5 TV for the musical 'Love, Johnny', about the life and music of Johnny Mercer.
I was privileged to play Mercer alongside an all-star cast.

The music clip is to the RIGHT under the 'Sidebar.'
Clip 2 is an interview with Calvin A. Ramsey,

Just Another Gig
Original © Dave Bass
2-25-03

Funny how you can start with one idea and end up with another. I was driving home from a terrible gig when a melody (and the rather sarcastic title) came to me.
When I got home and started working on the tune, it turned into something like a film-noir soundtrack.
I am happy with the result, but it certainly wasn't
what I started out with.

Dan Baraszu, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Keith Runfolla, drums

Dave Bass, flute

A Night in Tunisia
Dizzy Gillespie
Arrangement © Dave Bass
6-7-00

I have always felt comfortable with odd time signatures.
This arrangement came to me while driving to my gig at Fernbank in '95 and has been in the repertoire ever since, slowly evolving.
On the CD version we play it totally different.

Dan Baraszu, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Robert Rushing, drums
Dave Bass, alto sax

Zingaro
Antonio Carlos Jobim
5-31-00

Antonio Carlos Jobim was a true musical poet. I love the winding, chromatic line here; it reminds me of a song my father wrote back in the 50's.

Dan Baraszu, guitar (off camera)
Tim Delaney, bass
Terry Smith, drums
Dave Bass, tenor sax

Goin' back to New Orleans
Joe Liggins
8-2-00

This was played on a cheap student Bundy sax which I no longer even own. In it's own way, it got an interesting sound. Compare to the smoother sound of 'I concentrate on You' on a totally different horn.

Dan Baraszu, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Robert Rushing, drums
Dave Bass, alto sax

Killing me Softly
Charles Fox & Norman Gimbel
3-15-00

This goes out to Jen, who requested this song though we hadn't played it in forever.

Tim Delaney, bass
Terry Smith, drums

From soulful to sophisticated - R&B, funk, rock & roll and original material.

Ain't no Doubt I'll Win
Original © Dave Bass
12-18-06

This song was written and recorded during
a difficult period of my life.
The CD version is faster & really rocks!
On the video, I sang the wrong stanza at the end -
I should have sang;
"So I'm leaving... leaving this old town."
And leave I did.

Dave Bass, voice & guitar

You Belong to Me
Carly Simon & Michael McDonald
2-15-06

A mini-masterpiece from Carly Simon and Michael McDonald, with its themes of love, longing and possessiveness. An awesome melody, great chord changes, and a hellova range to sing.
I hadn't played guitar in years when I recorded this, so my hands were hurting like mad, (which is why I'm wincing) - but I got through it!

Dave Bass, voice & guitar

Combobulated
Original

8-10-06

George Carlin's had this hilarious comedy routine in the 70's about words that
should exist but don't:
" There's nonchalant... but what about chalant?"
When I wrote this tune it felt 'discombobulated,'
yet it had logic and order - hence the title.

My second band 'Stretch' is very experimental.
Sometimes I just start a tune without saying a word
and see where things go.

Rob Henson, bass
Darren Stanley, drums
Dave Bass, percussion & alto sax

Wrapped up in Love Again
Albert King
2-9-06

Albert King is my favorite blues vocalist, and the album 'Years Gone By' is my favorite blues record. There's something about the sound of that Stax theater, that fat-ass bass sound, those punchy horns, and ol' Albert playing his flying V - upside down,
singin' with a cigar in his mouth!

Dan Baraszu, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Marlon Patton, drums

Goin' to Kansas City

I went a little wild here with the outfit and improvised this melody on the spot, which I am now using in another song.

Dave Bass, bari sax

Cold Sweat
James Brown
8-21-98

This was taken at Fernbank Museum, where I started their Martinis & Imax nights and played them for years.
That's Jeff Sipe on drums, (Colonel Bruce Hampton, Leftover Salmon, Susan Tedeschi).
Listen to his drum breaks - he's like a machine!
The room we're in is a planetarium, which means it looked great but the acoustics stunk.

Karl Weismantel, guitar
Tim Delaney, bass
Jeff Sipe, drums
Tara Prizito, videographer
Dave Bass, alto sax

I Second that Emotion
'Smokey' Robinson & Alfred Cleveland
11-26-05

Just goofin' around, a cappella.
I love old, classic R&B!
I had just shaved my head before I made this clip.
(Which is why my mom hates it -
there - happy now, mom?)
: )

Dave Bass, voice

Original material, both my father's and mine, spanning 1948 to the present!
Stay tuned - much more to come!

SOLO GUITAR & VOICE

My father was a professional guitarist and composer in New York in the 40's-60's.
When I was 13 or so, he taught me to play guitar, but for years I neglected it, until recently.
Now I love playing it again!

WUDASSE - (ETHIOPIAN) - 7-29-05
This is from a second night I sat in with this band, (see above); this time on bari sax.

TRAGIC PLASTIC - (ROCK & ROLL)- 'PEEPING TOM' - 8-22-03
I was in the studio at 2 o'clock in the morning doing some recording when the engineer Tim Delaney said, "Before you pack up, blow over this cut I've been working on." (of Tom Delaney's - a gifted singer-songwriter). After a couple of takes, I heard him laughing thru the headphones. Apparently he got just what he wanted - some nasty rock & roll saxophone!

RUA 6 - (BRAZILIAN) - 'AQUELE ABRACO' - 2001
From 2001-mid '03, I played with the Brazilian band 'Rua 6' at Loca Luna in Midtown. These were some of my favorite gigs. I laid this down quickly using my old soprano mp. I now play something more open and 'fatter.'
Gilberto Gil is an amazing writer; his 'unplugged' album is one of my favorites.

RUSTY JOHNSON - (ACOUSTIC) - 'Sentimental Me' - 1993
Rusty was one of the first musicians to welcome me into the city of Atlanta warm-heartedly. He was also the first person to put me on a studio album. He has a wonderful, rich voice and a fine lyric sensibility. I recorded this song around the time I moved into my apartment in Virginia-Highlands, which I was in for 15 years - so it has special meaning for me. The title is now more than ironic.
