THESE
CLIPS ARE DIVIDED INTO FIVE SECTIONS: Some
Youtube favorites (click to activate): Most of these clips were taken from live video, but some are rough-cuts from my upcoming debut CD, 'Don't Fence me In.' I will soon be adding acting clips from "Love, Johnny," as well as performances with DJ Anne Tyler, a Turkish bellydance group, etc. ___________ To play the videos, just click on a thumbnail image. A seperate window will pop up from Youtube where content streams at high speed and you can leave comments and ratings! You can also go directly to my youtube home page, if you like; www.youtube.com/DaveBassDotCom If you have a LOW-SPEED connection, (56k or less), 'AUDIO' may be quicker than video, but sometimes not - try them both. There may be a pause of 10-60 seconds before audio plays, even on some high-speed connections. I now have a DVD for sale which contains much of the footage on this page -in high quality. Sales from the DVDs go towards the completion of my CD! Click on Buy CD. Enjoy! |

DREAM - 2-25-03 - Original One morning I awoke from a dream in which I was singing the words to this song. In retrospect, I realize it was God's way of pushing me into writing; something I had always wanted to do but was avoiding. I will add the words in time. This song is dedicated to 'T', whose spirit permeated my life during this period. Dan Baraszu, guitar, Tim Delaney, bass, Keith Runfolla, drums. Song © Dave Bass. |

IN 7 - 9-4-05 - Original If you like bari sax, check out my solo on 'Mack the Knife' with the Gainesville Big Band. I got tired of seeing myself in the same old stuff on all my videos, so I went a little nuts one day, cracked out my 70's garb, grabbed a N.Y. cap that reminded me of my hometown, (Astoria, Queens!), and improvised this little ditty on the spot. I am recycling it into another song. This was recorded in my bathroom, so it sounds a little 'tubby.' (ha). Song © Dave Bass. |

ANOTHER GIG - 2-25-03 - Original It's funny how you can start off with one idea and end up with another. I was driving home from a gig which was very challenging, to put it nicely. A melody (and rather sarcastic title) came to me which fit the mood I was in. But when I got home and started working on the tune, it turned into something different. More like a film-noir soundtrack. I am happy with the result, although it certainly wasn't where I started. Thanks to Tom Carpenter for the shoot. DEEP IS THE OCEAN - 11-26-98 A classic tune by Irving Berlin. This video was taken at Cafe Tu Tu Tango, which was recently demolished along with the rest of the Buckhead strip. It makes me sad; this was a fun gig. I also met my friend, artist Clifford Bailey here- www.cliffordbailey.com. I am playing a horn and mouthpiece combination I don't use right now on tenor. I think it's interesting how different equipment can inspire different ways of playing. Compare this to the gritty tone on 'Honky Tonk,' where I'm using a totally different set up. Much thanks to Mark Garber who filmed this clip. Karl Weismantel, guitar, Tim Delaney, bass, Robert Rushing, drums. |

OLD FEELING - Trio - 9-20-01 Drumming is one of my passions. What is it about saxophonists who are frustrated drummers? (Bergonzi, Brecker...). One of my favorite things to do is sing and play drums, which I do in a trio-version of my quartet. I love being part of the rhythm section, grooving and being in a supportive role. This was taken at the swanky Four Seasons. Dan Baraszu, guitar, Tim Delaney bass. |

SERENADE - 10-17-06 Some songs only have to be whispered, not screamed, to get their message across. This is one of the songs my dad sang to me when I was a kid. He would prop his guitar up on one knee, me on the other and play. It was great growing up in a musical household where music was a second language we all spoke. My favorite recording of this song is by Tony Bennett on an album called "My Hometown." When Bennett played the Fox, I had him autograph it. He looked up at me quizzically and asked, "Where did you get this?" Which promptly brought a smile to my face. |

THE KNIFE - Gainesville Big Band - 1-28-06 In 2005, singer Dejie Johnson called me to play on her album. During the conversation she asked, "You don't happen to have a bari sax by chance?" I didn't, so I borrowed one for the recording session. Well, I so fell in love with the sound I had to have one. I mean, what ELSE makes a sound like this? (Lookout, here come the jokes)! I love kicking bari, especially in a horn section. It's marvelous to be on the bottom end of the sound, layin' back behind the beat under all those horns. Move over, Lisa Simpson! Much thanks to friend and mouthpiece luthier Will Grizzle, who created the custom mouthpiece on which I play. Thanks to Scott Fugate who did the camera work - and to the GBB! |

| HONKY
TONK - 1-31-08 I grew up on the blues as much as anything else. I recall my father playing the guitar solo from this many times; he even wrote his own set of lyrics to it. Frankie is a great cat. He owns Atlanta Vintage Guitars in Smyrna. We bumped into each other again recently on a church gig. I didn't realize how much he loved the blues until I caught up with him at Fat Matt's Rib Shack one night and we tore into 'Honky Tonk.' Clifford Scott was the original sax player that brought the spit and grit to this piece with Bill Doggett's band. Frankie Moates, guitar, Ben Gettys, bass, Eddie Tigner, organ, Ron Logsdon, drums. Thanks to the lovely Claire Dallas for camera work. |

- 12-8-05 "What makes your big head so hard...?" Another one of the many songs my dad sang to me as a kid. I've always loved to dance, regardless of style. Some years ago I had the opportunity to take a teacher's training course in ballroom dance and I learned a lot from it. In the origins of jazz, dance was closely tied to the music. From the very beginning, jazz was a music for the head, heart and the feet. The swing dancers from A.E.S.D.A. are, (from closest to band): Patrick Manigault & Gina Helfrich, Robert White & Jodie Bennett. Dan Baraszu, guitar, Tim Delaney, bass, Marlon Patton, drums |

CONCENTRATE ON YOU - 2-25-03 In terms of American theater composers, I can hardly think of one I like better than Cole Porter. He wrote great melodies, great harmonies and great lyrics. DEIXEO O SAMBA - 11-19-06 This is a beautiful old Brazilian song. - 5-31-00 In terms of all-round musicians, Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of the finest; a true musical poet. This is one of his more obscure melodies. I love the winding, chromatic line; it reminds me of a song my dad wrote in the 50's. Guitarist Gary Rosenak introduced this tune to me in '95 and I was attracted to it immediately. I have been blessed to play with some great drummers over the years and Terry Smith is one of them. He's got a great feel. He now plays at Dante's Down the Hatch in Buckhead. Dan Baraszu, guitar (off camera), Tim Delaney, bass, Terry Smith, drums |

BACK TO NEW ORLEANS - 8-2-00 I learned saxophone on alto at 11 but switched over to tenor exclusively at 15. And then one day I bought this horn from a former student who was going to trade it at a pawnshop for a $30 watch. I gave her $50 for it; it was a cheap Bundy, played out of tune and drove me nuts - but man, was it fun, and it got me playing alto again. Here, it sounds like I'm trying to blow the darn thing apart! I wouldn't play this way today, (and probably couldn't with my current horn), but that's what makes this interesting to watch. Compare the difference in tone with 'I concentrate on you.' Funny - I now miss this cheap old Bundy 'cause I could get positively raucous on it! Dan Baraszu, guitar, Tim Delaney, bass, Robert Rushing, drums |

BELONG TO ME - 2-15-06 For me, the 70's were the Golden Age of Pop, when writers like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor and Steely Dan were blending everything that came before them - Tin Pan Alley, Blues, Funk, Rock, Folk, Country, Classical, etc. Carly Simon and Michael McDonald wrote a mini-pop masterpiece here, with its theme of love, longing and possessiveness. An awesome melody, great chord changes, and a hellova range. I hadn't played guitar in years when I recorded this, so my hands were hurting like mad, (which is why I'm wincing). But I got through it! |

SWEAT - 8-21-98 This was taken at Fernbank Museum, where I helped start their long-running Martinis & Imax series and played it for 2 1/2 years. That's Jeff Sipe on drums, otherwise known as Apt. Q258, (Colonel Bruce Hampton, Leftover Salmon, Susan Tedeschi). Listen to those drum breaks - he's like a machine - and on only four pieces! The room we are in is a planetarium, which means it looked gorgeous but the acoustics sucked. It was a great gig, though, and one of the earliest example of my band on video. Thanks to Tara Prizito for filming. Karl Weismantel, guitar, Tim Delaney, bass, Jeff Sipe, drums |

SECOND THAT EMOTION - Solo Voice - 11-26-05 Okay, I admit it - I'm a nut. I was in the mood and turned on the camera - no guitar, no sax, no flute, no bass, no drums - just pure a cappella. I love old, classic R&B. Don't think they've improved much on the wheel since then! As is clearly evidenced, I had just shaved my head when I made this video, just to see what it felt like. This is why my mother hates this clip. I had to make this disclaimer, for her. Happy now, mom? |

- (ETHIOPIAN) - 4-29-05 I love the Five Spot because it has a great stage, doubles as an art gallery, has good food and a 'real' vibe. My band 'Stretch' played here for a year, and I go back frequently to sit in with other bands. On a couple of separate nights, I sat in with this Ethiopian band playing a neat groove in an odd time signature. Little did I know they would release the recording on an album! |

TRAGIC PLASTIC - 'PEEPING TOM' - 8-22-03 I was in the studio at 2 o'clock in the morning doing some recording on my CD when the engineer, Tim Delaney, said, "Before you pack up, why don't you blow over this cut I've been working on?" (Tom Delaney's - a gifted singer-songwriter). After a couple of takes, I heard him laughing thru the headphones. Apparently he got just what he wanted - some nasty rock & roll saxophone! |

RUA 6 - (BRAZILIAN) - 'AQUELE ABRACO' - 2001 From 2001-mid '03, I played with the Brazilian band 'Rua 6' at Loca Luna in Midtown. These were some of my favorite gigs. They were pressed for time when I got to the studio, so I only had a half hour to lay down all the tracks. I recorded this with my old soprano mp. I now play something a bit more open and 'fatter.' Gilberto Gil is an amazing writer; his 'unplugged' album is one of my favorites. |

RUSTY JOHNSON - 'Sentimental Me' - 1993 Rusty was one of the first musicians to welcome me into the city of Atlanta warm-heartedly. He was also the first person to put me on a studio album. He has a wonderful, rich voice and a fine lyric sensibility. I recorded this song around the time I first moved into my apartment in Virginia-Highlands, so it has special meaning for me. It's ironic now, considering the title of the song. |
