by Philip Furia, 1990

John Herndon Mercer: A Portrait
by Gene Lees, 2004
The second biography on Mercer, done by Mercer's friend and former Downbeat editor Gene Lees. A very warm, personal look at the man and his craft. Gene is my favorite writer on the subject of jazz, probably owing to the fact that he is a lyricist and singer himself! He has written two of my other favorite books, "Meet me at Jim and Andy's", and "Singers and the Song", which has a chapter devoted to Mercer.

They're playing our Song
by Max Wilk, 1973, expanded 1991
A phenomenal set of interviews conducted by Max Wilk in the 70's with great songwriters. Simply superb.

Great American Popular Song, The Great Innovators 1900-1950
by Alec Wilder, 1972
Wilder is wildly opinionated, and you may not agree with all of his opinions, but he brings tremendous insight into the art of songwriting. His book focuses on melody, but there are forays into lyrics as well, and Mercer is touched on throughout. A must have for any writer or lover of great music.

An Evening with Johnny Mercer, (1971)
An Amazon reviewer said it best:
" Recorded at the "Y" concert hall in New York City in 1971, it runs slightly less than an hour in length and much of Mercer's greatest songs are presented, mainly in medley format. But that final medley is a real eye-opener. If you ever had doubt about his contribution to 20th century popular music, this medley alone will put them to rest for good. The easy-going personality of Mercer shines through, and he's clearly at ease with the moment here. The live interviews tend to illuminate the artist, rather than get in the way... So take an hour, kick back--and let it play straight through. If you weren't already a fan, you will be. If you were a fan, you're in for a rare treat, indeed.
